In the last year of my Degree Professor Shinnie offered a class on Ancient Egyptian Archaeology. I was lucky enough to get into it and it was one of the most exciting and enlightening classes I had. I was so thrilled to be able to discover the earlier history of ancient Egypt. I will always be grateful to Professor Shinnie for this class.

Professor Shinnie has done Sudanese ancient civilization a great service. We owe it to him that now, the world can talk about Sudanese Nubian studies, distinct from the more traditional ( Egyptological ) view. May God rest his soul in peace. We, in Sudan, shall remain grateful to him.

I met Peter Shinnie on a University of Calgary trip to West Africa in 1987. His teachings, manner and humanity had a profound influence on me. That trip shaped my life and my attitude towards the world and my fellow humans - thanks Peter.

I became friends with Peter in 1938, and shared his hopes for a better world. We have kept in touch over the years, and I will greatly miss his intelligence, enthusiasm and humour.
