THOMAS, Raymond Charles
December 12, 1926 - March 24, 2013
Ray Thomas, 86, of Calgary passed away peacefully on March 24 after a brief illness at the Foothills Medical Centre with his loving family by his side. Beloved husband of the late Mona Thomas, he was the loving father of Susan Hiebert (Rob) of Calgary and Laurene Rowe (Harvey) of Boston, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren Chelsea Radomski (Shaun), Paul Hiebert (Darci) and Jesse Hiebert all of Calgary and Austin and Ian Rowe of Boston. Ray was born in Calgary growing up in Crescent Heights and attending St. Mary's High School. He was a Royal Canadian Naval Veteran. For over 30 years a successful career at Chevron Canada Resources in facilities management was crafted. Fellow co-workers appreciated and respected his unfailing "can do" attitude both in the workplace and out. Ray and Mona were adventurous travellers visiting such exotic places as Hawaii, Tahiti, Southeast Asia, South America, Antarctica, North Africa, much of Europe and the United Kingdom. Ray was an avid hiker in the Canadian Rockies. With Mona and their family, many summers were enjoyed at his favourite fishing retreat in Montana. He was a long-standing member of the Garrison Curling Club, the Danish Canadian Club, Woodcliff United Church, Optimist Seniors Skating Group, Chevron Retirees Association and the 264 Royal Canadian Legion. Ray is also survived by his brother Cliff Thomas (Irene), his sisters-in- law Lois (Don) MacArthur, Lorraine MacLennan, Vera Beattie and brother-in-law David (Heather) MacLennan and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of Ray's life will take place on Monday, April 1 at the Danish Canadian Club, Tivoli Room, 727 - 11 Avenue S.W. beginning at 4:00 p.m. Ray wished for this to be an informal gathering with food and refreshments. Please forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. At the family's request, memorial tributes may be made directly to the Tom Baker Cancer Centre (Ray was a cancer survivor) at 403-521-3433 or www.albertacancer.ca. The family wishes to offer their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to all of the amazing staff at the Emergency Department and Unit 36 at Foothills Medical Centre. In living memory of Ray Thomas, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
