CHARKO, Rod Eugene
March 30, 1961 - June 8, 2012
With great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Rod Charko of Calgary, Alberta. He is survived by his wife, Maureen McNaul, children Bradley and Allie, mother Louise, sister Diane (Steven McKinley), and extended family. Rod's father Eugene predeceased him in 2010. Rod grew up in Calgary with a strong community of neighbourhood friends. His life- long passion for science and space sparked early experiments in rocket launching from the backyard, with one notable incident of a "successful" launch landing in his elementary school playground four blocks away. After graduating from William Aberhart High School in 1979, Rod achieved university degrees in electrical engineering, aeronautical and astronautical engineering, and an MBA. Interests included traveling, running, hang-gliding, photography, model airplanes, history, and time spent with friends as they married and created families of their own. In 1996, he married Maureen and was happy to become a father. Rod's talent for building things is evident in the family home, and he enjoyed being with the kids at the Winter Club, on the soccer field, on camping trips, and as a part-time scout leader. Rod worked in the telecommunications industry for many years in several cities before pursuing a career in venture capital and with technology start-up companies. He was proud of his present position as CEO of Alberta Enterprise Corporation. Honoured in Alberta Venture magazine as one of fifty most influential Albertans of 2010, Rod's accomplishments reflected intellect and tenacity within challenging industries. His loss will be felt by family, friends, and colleagues alike. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Luke's Catholic Church (corner of Northmount Drive and Northland Drive N.W.) on Friday, June 15, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a trust for Bradley and Allie at any Branch of the Royal Bank of Canada (please reference Branch No. 01259, Account No. 5060249, donations must be either cash, money order, or electronic transfer and account under the name of "Maureen McNaul"). Photos, memories and condolences may be shared with Rod's family through www.evanjstrong.com. Arrangements in care of EVAN J. STRONG FUNERAL SERVICES. Phone: 403-265-1199.
