Roger Brightwell fought his battle with ALS with gusto and passed away peacefully on June 4, 2014 at the age of 49 years. Roger was born on March 20, 1965, the youngest of six children. He was raised on a farm near Bengough, Saskatchewan. He moved out to the Peace River area when he was 17. It was in Northern Alberta that Roger found his first career in transportation. He was always looking for a challenge and loved to drive in the most extreme conditions. For 15 years he travelled throughout the arctic and loved the remoteness and challenge of the work. At the age of 40 he decided on a career change so he could be closer to his family and still outdoors. He went into Environmental Studies at Olds College and graduated in 2009. Upon graduation Roger's career path had to be put on hold as he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Roger believed he was living with ALS not dying from it. He was an inspiration to those who knew him. He focused on life and making the most of it. Above all he never lost his ability to find compassion for others. Roger is survived by his beloved wife Monica, his son Ryan, his daughter Jesse (Leif), his grandchildren Rowen and Mabel, his bonus daughter Taja (Charles), his brothers and sisters George (Ethel), Mary, Jean (Bud), Harry, and Linda (Dan), and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who loved him dearly. Roger was predeceased by his father Thomas and his mother Bernice. Relatives and friends are invited to a Celebration of Roger's life at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W., Calgary, AB) on Sunday, June 22, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ALS Society of Alberta, No. 250, 4723 - 1 Street S.W., Calgary, Alberta T2G 4Y8. In living memory of Roger Brightwell, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
