Senator Brown Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 23 to Feb. 25, 2018.
Senator (Retired) Bert Brown March 22, 1938 - February 3, 2018 "Dear, Dad: Well, you and Mom are together again after a short separation and I know that the two of you are smiling and shaking your heads at this tribute. Never ones for conventionality, it took me a little while, but I finally found the style that suits us best. It wasn't easy to summarize your gifts and contributions to community, the Country of Canada, and my life in so many words, but here goes...born in Calgary, Alberta in 1938, mere hours from Mom in Oklahoma, proved to be more than mere fate. You attended Mount Royal College and completed a Civil Engineering Degree at the University of Oklahoma in 1962, where you two met on a blind date. Returning to Kathyrn, Alberta in 1968, you co-owned and operated Brownhill Farms, Ltd. until 1999. Interspersed in those 31 years, you managed to find the time to serve your community in the following capacities: the Municipal District of Rocky View Planning Commission, Founder of the Canadian Agriculture Movement, the TransAlta Utilities Southern Alberta Advisory Board, Western Irrigation District Board, Calgary Chamber of Commerce, Founder of the Committee for a Triple E Senate, the Olds College Capital Campaign, Canada West Foundation, Fraser Institute, and the Woodrow Wilson Centre. You were a columnist for both the Calgary Herald and Calgary Sun publications and a recipient of the Alberta Centennial Medal in 2003. Last, but by no means least, you ran in all three Senate Elections in Canada's history. None of which would have been held if not for your tireless 24+ years working for an Elected, Equal, and Effective (Triple E) Senate. All of the signs you plowed in the neighbor's field were evidently somewhat successful as you were the only individual to receive the most number of votes in any election in Canadian history and you became the Second Elected Senator in Canada, appointed by Prime Minister Stephen Harper on July 10, 2007. Most importantly, of all your achievements, you were unsurpassed as a husband and father. The three of us were the definition of a Nuclear Family and this remaining Proton loves and misses you both more than you could possibly know. Thank you for your guidance, laughter, and love throughout my life." Love, Angie. A Celebration of Bert and Alice's Life will be held this spring in the Kathyrn area; details to follow in The Calgary Herald. In tribute to Bert's memory, donations to the Alzheimer's Association are greatly appreciated.

To the Brown family: thank you for 'lending' us your most stalwart representative, Senator Bert Brown. It was so nice to have a properly-elected Senator after decades of political hacks. He served his country well -- our condolences, the Poland family.
