December 23, 1924 - December 26, 2013
With sadness we announce the passing of our mother Sharna Laven, age 89. Raised in Winnipeg and then Drumheller, she was the only child of Edward and Lillian Weiner. On relocating to Calgary after high school, mom met Bernie, married after the war, and then moved to Vancouver where she ensured dad graduated law school. On returning to Calgary, mom raised and is survived by her four children: Lori (David); Shel (Svetlana); Blair (Tamar); and Craig (Zoë). Somehow finding the time, she was also active in various service groups, including ORT and Jewish Family Service. Mom was never happier than when hosting extended family dinners on every holiday and occasion. Predeceased by dad in 1998 after 48 years of marriage, mom is also survived by her grandchildren: Jaclyn; Megan; Sonia; Yakov; Zen; and Zev. We thank the staff in both Unit 83 and the ICU of Rockyview Hospital for their attention and compassion. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 29 at the Beth Tzedec Synagogue, 1325 Glenmore Trail S.W. Interment to follow at the Erlton Street Cemetery at Erlton Street and 30 Avenue S.W. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations may be made to the charity of their choice. Arrangements in care of CHEVRA KADISHA of CALGARY, Site 12, Box 36, RR 9, Calgary, AB T2J 5G5. Phone 403-244-4747.
