AVANN, Thomas Alfred
June 5, 1958 – Maryfield, SK
August 23, 2014 – Calgary, AB
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Thomas Alfred Avann of Calgary, AB has passed away suddenly on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the age of 56 years. Thomas was born on June 5, 1958, in Maryfield, Saskatchewan, and he was the first child of Alfred and Lila Avann. The family moved to Moosomin, Saskatchewan in 1959, and this was Thomas' home for the next twenty years. Thomas attended the University of Saskatchewan and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering (Electrical) in 1985 and then furthered his studies in Management. Since that time, he has been employed in the oil and gas industry and has worked with many of the major oil companies. Thomas enjoyed the challenge and successes he had with his own businesses – Caber Engineering and Avann Consulting Services. Whether he was in the position of team lead, project lead or running his own business, his goal was always about excellence, challenging oneself and working with others to ensure their successes. Excellence was always a part of what Thomas did. He was an athlete right from the star; he was moved up to older age groups because of his hockey skills. At the age of eleven, he attended the Saskatchewan Summer School of the Arts as a trumpet player and was noticed by one of the trumpet instructors who then wanted to secure Thomas's talent and groom him for a music career at his university. He was a cross- country runner and was selected as one of the worthy recipients to carry the torch across Canada when he was in his teens. These characteristics of determination, developing higher skills, and always aiming for excellence are what he expected of himself and others throughout his life. Because of all these characteristics, he was a much respected member of the oil and gas industry. Thomas was an avid cyclist and hiker. He had many long rides through Fishcreek Provincial Park and enjoyed all the wonderful scenery nature provided. He loved exploring Canada and the world, and he was able to explore all but one continent. Thomas was very close to his family and provided any support and help that was needed. Caring for ailing parents, supporting and encouraging his sister through university, and keeping an eye on the well-being of all members of the family from cousins to aunts and uncles together; these things he did with an open heart. His friends were a large part of his life and he enjoyed kicking back to enjoy a beer, whether it was at a local pub, at a Cub's baseball game, or across the alley in a garage. This is where he relaxed. Thomas is survived by his sister Elizabeth (Betty) Upton. Mourning his loss and keeping him in their hearts are his uncle Stu Shing; aunt Anna-Mae Koe; and numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents Alfred and Lila Avann. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY (Fish Creek, 14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Condolences may be forwarded through In living memory of Thomas Avann, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
