WILSON, Violet MacGregor
August 5, 1921 – Fort Macleod, AB
September 21, 2013 – Calgary, AB
Violet passed away in the early morning hours of September 21, 2013 at Sarcee Hospice after a short struggle with cancer. Violet was born in Fort Macleod, AB to Kenneth and Ursula MacGregor. Her father died a young man in 1929 and her mother predeceased her in 1965. Violet was their only child. In 1948 Violet married James Wilson of Calgary at Scarboro United Church. They were married for 46 years when Jim died in 1994. Her "MacGregor Cousins", Dr. John of Chicago, Kathleen Swanson (Cairns) of Calgary and formerly Granum, AB and Charles of Calgary, predeceased Violet. Violet was an executive secretary in the oil industry for many years, retiring in 1981 to care for her beloved Jim. Violet was a longstanding supporter of the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra and the Calgary Opera. She was a resourceful, wise, elegant and engaging woman with a streak of polite toughness. She faced and handled many challenges in her life with firm resolve. Violet will be remembered by her many friends that she valued deeply. Surviving family of Violet are cousins, Coleen Wiebe (Wallace), Michael Cairns (Connie) and Margann MacGregor of Calgary; John MacGregor (Daisy) and Debbie Riddell (Bob) of Edmonton; Jay MacGregor (Gloria) of Chicago, IL, Sue MacGregor of Charlevoix, MI (predeceased by husband Ken), and Roderick MacGregor of Phoenix, AZ. Violet is also survived by Jim's niece, Jane Lofto (Don) of Kitchener, ON and Jim's nephews, Ken (Terry Anne) Soderberg and Eric (Lori) Soderberg of Conrich, AB. Violet's family are grateful for the loving attention from her great friend, Dale Kirschenman over many years and also from her "Girl Friday", Theresa Holdershaw and her loving friend from Toronto, Sue Cantlie. The family expressly thanks all of the nursing staff at Sarcee, as well as the kind attention of Dr. Henrietta Van Rooi for their loving care of Violet and, indeed, the whole family. A Memorial Service will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T3C 2H1) on Sunday, September 29, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. Rev. Lee Spice officiating. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial donations in Violet's memory may be made directly to Scarboro United Church. In living memory of Violet Wilson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
