BETZLER , William (Bill) Bernard September 17, 1922 - December 19, 2009 William (Bill) Bernard Betzler, 87, passed away peacefully Saturday, December 19, 2009 at Sarcee Palliative Care, Calgary, Alberta. Born September 17, 1922, in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. to Aloysius Otto and Mary Elizabeth Betzler, the fifth of ten children, he arrived in Canada serving in the U.S. Air Force as an aircraft mechanic based in Edmonton. A Drummer in the military band he met his true love and wife of sixty-five years Jean (Joy) Dobbie who performed highland dancing for the troops. They married November 11, 1944 and stayed in Edmonton to have their family of seven children. He was very active in St. Pius X Catholic Church and Sherbrooke Community. Drumming was a significant part of his life and he played many a gig in and around Edmonton, including Klondike Day festivities. After moving the family to Calgary in 1967, he continued his community activities in Canadian Martyrs Parish, the Lions Club of Calgary and the CNIB. In the late seventies he formed the jazz band Big Daddy and the Dixie Cats. With his imposing six feet seven inches height, he was none other than Big Daddy himself. His involvement with the Alberta's Musicians Union earned him and his band a level of high regard in the community and they were invited to many prestigious jazz festivals across North America. Predeceased by his daughter Jane in 1992, Bill is lovingly remembered and will be missed by his wife Joy, children Catherine, Joanne, Barbara, William, Michael, Judith, thirteen grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Canadian Martyrs Catholic Church (835 Northmount Drive N.W.) on Monday, December 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Queen's Park Cemetery.
