Anthony Anselmo Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 13 to Nov. 15, 2009.
ANSELMO , Anthony Garry (Tony) OC March 14, 1918 - November 10, 2009 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of a magnificent man Tony Anselmo, beloved husband of Minerva Anselmo. Tony was born in Michel, B.C. and grew up in Vancouver. He met Minerva at an RCAF dinner in Regina and they married March 13, 1943 in Pincher Creek. He was trained as a wireless operator and gunner for the Air Force at SAIT, and flew forty-one RCAF bomber missions overseas. He returned to Vancouver after the war and reestablished his career with Canada Safeway. He worked his way up through the ranks and retired as President and CEO of Canada Safeway and a director of Safeway U.S. Inc. Tony devoted his time to his passionate support for Canadian Football and Amateur sports through his many offices with the Calgary Stampeder Football Club and the improvements he instituted in McMahon Stadium. Tony was a community builder of the highest caliber and his efforts as a leader had a significant positive impact on those around him and wider society. His impressive accomplishments and talents were widely acknowledged and he was formally recognized many times for his contributions to the community. Most recently in September of this year Tony traveled to Winnipeg to be inducted in the CFL Hall of Fame. His service to the community was only outshone by his commitment and dedication to his family and friends. Tony was a devoted husband, father and grandfather and he leaves behind his family and many friends who loved him, enjoyed his wonderful sense of humor, and will dearly miss this man of immeasurable accomplishments and uncompromising integrity. Besides his loving wife Minerva, Tony is survived by his children and their spouses, Garry and Irma Anselmo of Vancouver, Dale LeBis of Calgary and Toni and Paul Trudel of Calgary; five grandchildren and their spouses, Janelle, David (Lisa), Adrien (Ana), and Jeffrey. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church (4718 Worcester Drive S.W.) on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . In living memory of Tony Anselmo, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Park Memorial Chapel, 5008 ELBOW DRIVE S.W. Telephone: 403-243-8200.

To Tony's Family;
We will sorrily miss our friend Tony, who we met at a Hal Crittinden Christmas party on Academy Park Rd. in Regina in 1962. Over the years, and particularly after we moved to Calgary in 1975, we saw him frequently with items either football, McMahon Stadium, or Olympic related events.
We had spoken to him only a short time ago when he received his honor in the Football Hall of Fame.
He once told me the story of his posting to Regina when the Safeway head office was in Winnipeg as he said the "big man came to Regina to see how I was doing he had a list of 15 names in his hand which included Kramer, Solomon, McPherson, and others of power broker elite in Regina" The boss said to me " here are the people I want you to meet in the next 12 months"
Tony looked at the list took out a Safeway ball point pen and marked off every name and wrote done beside. Needless to say the boss was stunned and said "How in 6 months would you meet all these pillars of Regina Society?" Tony replied " I stay on the YMCA on 12th Avenue and they all come to swim and work out, so I met them all at the Y
May Tony rest in a magnificent peace which would be reflective of his time on earth.
God Bless
