JERRARD, Irene "Raye"
(nee McDonald)
March 14, 1931 – Hull, England
April 18, 2014 – Calgary, Alberta
It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of Raye Jerrard on Friday, April 18 at the age of 83 years. Raye was a young nurse (WREN) when she met a charming sailor and "English patient", Roy Jerrard, who she married in 1951. Immigrating to Canada in 1957, they settled in Etobicoke, Ontario where Raye was a pioneer in direct sales, working for Sarah Coventry Jewelry. In 1965, they (with daughters Shauna and Lisa) moved to Calgary. Recognizing her driving spirit, "Sarah" asked Raye to take the company west. A successful working mother in the 1960's, she was ahead of her time. In the 1970's, after a few years in Kelowna, Raye and family returned to Calgary where she continued to pursue her love of glamour and sales, eventually managing the Eaton's cosmetics department for several years until her retirement in 1996. Following a granddaughter's diagnosis with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) in 1980, she became a passionate volunteer for the Canadian CF Foundation and served as National President for two terms, a role that took her to global CF symposiums in Israel, Russia and France. In 1992, in recognition of her work with CF, she received a Governor General's medal. Earlier this year, Raye was honoured again by the CF Calgary Chapter and Kinettes for starting the successful fundraiser, "Wrapping for a Cure" twenty-five years ago. Throughout her career and years with the CF organization, she forged many great friendships that would last a lifetime. Raye was a kind-hearted and wonderful mother, nana, grandma, and auntie who leaves behind a legacy of love. Predeceased by Roy in 2004, she is survived by daughters Shauna Ryan (Murray) and Lisa Birnie (Brian), as well as cherished granddaughters Kelly Ryan, Jessie Robertson, Chelsea and Lorin Birnie. She is also lovingly remembered by extended family in England, and of course her faithful dog and companion, King. A Celebration of Raye's Life will be held at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) on Monday, April 28, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Calgary & Southern Alberta Chapter, 1130F – 44 Avenue S.E., Calgary, AB T2G 4W6 (Telephone 403-266-5295, www.cfcalgary.ca). Raye's family would like to thank the staff of Unit 81 at the Foothills Medical Centre for their compassionate care during her final days. In living memory of Raye Jerrard, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
