STRANDLUND, Henry
Henry Strandlund passed away at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary, AB in the early morning hours of Monday, May 5, 2014 at the age of 90 years. Left to mourn his passing is his wife of 53 years, Anna and their daughter, Janice. He was predeceased by his sisters, Bernice Kemp (Broadview, SK) and Connie Mickelson (Victoria, BC) and closest cousin Len Strandlund, his wife Gladys and their son Gordon (Calgary, AB). Henry was born on April 7, 1924 on a farm in Broadview, SK where he went to the local school and much to his chagrin, was a student of his older sister, Connie. After completing school, Henry entered the Canadian Armed Forces in the Air Force division from 1942 to 1946 during which time he served overseas during the Second World War. After a brief period back on the farm, he re-enlisted in 1949 and after serving in England for a number of years in the 1950s was then stationed in Cold Lake, AB where he met Anna Anderson who was also serving in the Armed Forces as a nurses' aide. They were married in Moose Jaw, SK on June 24, 1961 and moved to CFB Greenwood Nova Scotia where their daughter Janice was born in 1963. While serving as an air crew flight engineer during the Cold War, Henry's regular shifts involved patrolling the Atlantic Ocean for Russian submarines and he was later promoted to Master Warrant Officer. When this role took him into a more administrative role, he chose to retire from the Armed Forces and moved his family to Calgary, AB where he worked for the Alberta Liquor Control Board until retiring in 1986. During his retirement years, Henry enjoyed golfing, curling and going on bus tours with his wife. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER'S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 - 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen's Park Cemetery) on Friday, May 9, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Suite 200, 119 - 14 Street N.W., Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6 or Alzheimer Society of Calgary, 201, 222 - 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3.
