AKINS, Maureen
1946 - 2011
Maureen Akins passed away at home on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at the age of 65 years. She will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by her husband of thirty years, Gordon, as well as by her children: Lindsay (Simon), Mike (Pat); brother, Don (Gladys); sister, Sandy (Cam); grandchildren: Alysha, Carly, Jadah; niece, Andrea (Joe and Kaitlin) and many more close family and friends including, Frankie Steele. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Francis and Stanley Young, as well as by her stepson Randy Akins and her infant grandson, Justin. Maureen was born on August 12, 1946 in Cranbrook, B.C. and grew up following her father, a member of the Royal Air Force. She spent time in England, as well as Ottawa, before settling in Calgary. Maureen worked for the Calgary Board of Education for 25 years and then United Library Services for 15 years. She was a lover of dogs and enjoyed spending time in her garden. Maureen loved to travel; with Gordon she experienced many places around the globe. Her last trip was a much-loved Caribbean cruise with Gordon, Lindsay, and Simon. She was extremely generous, and reveled in doing the "little things" for others with great thoughtfulness and attention to detail. Those that were fortunate enough to cross her path were always made to feel special. She was the glue of her family, the rock for her friends, a best friend to her daughter, and a lifelong companion to her husband. Her glow will be sadly missed, but will never be forgotten. A Celebration of Maureen's Life will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. To email expressions of sympathy: subject heading: Maureen Akins.
