GIBSON, Margaret Christina Campbell (nee MacFarlane)
July 6, 1923 - January 29, 2013
It is with sad and heavy hearts we announce the passing of Margaret Gibson on January 29, 2013 of Alzheimer's disease. Margaret was predeceased by her sister, Muriel Bragg, in 2008, her mother, Marion MacFarlane in 1962 and her father George MacFarlane in 1968. She is survived by her husband Jim Gibson, her daughters Jayne (Doug) Walker and Jennifer (Terry) Johnston, her brother Gordon (Bunnie) MacFarlane of Guelph, her sisters-in-law Margaret Gibson and Francis Bye and her four grandchildren Chelsea and Cameron Johnston and Alison and Andrew Walker. Margaret was born near Wapella, Saskatchewan. She studied nursing in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba and worked as a Public Health Nurse in Regina. Margaret met her future husband Jim on a blind date on New Year's Eve 1949 and they were married in Wapella on June 2, 1951. They continued to live in Regina after marriage where she became a full-time Mom to daughters Jayne and Jennifer who were born a few years later. From Regina, Margaret and her family moved to Calgary in 1960, Toronto in 1964, then back to Calgary in 1970 which became her permanent home. Margaret loved to travel with Jim, especially to Maui and their retirement home in Victoria over the past 25 years, which became a special place of many memorable family vacations. After Jayne and Jennifer married and started families of their own, Margaret was a second Mom to her four grandchildren whom she loved very much. Margaret had a giving and philanthropic heart. Her many volunteer activities over a span of decades included Lakeview United Church, the PEO, Chapter I, Calgary and Meals on Wheels. Margaret inspired us all with her courage and strength and was a breast cancer survivor. The family extends their gratitude to her caregivers Joan, Kim and Marlena and the staff at Brentwood Care Facility where Margaret spent the last three and a half years. The Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 5 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of EDEN BROOK FUNERAL HOME (corner of 17 Avenue and Lower Springbank Road S.W., Calgary).
