Elma made the world special just by being in it. She lived life passionately and gracefully, with a deep commitment to her friends and family. She passed away peacefully at the Rockyview Hospital in Calgary. Elma was born in Saskatoon, SK to Sonja and Abe Shelly. She married Mickey Cochrane in 1951, and their family moved to Calgary in 1961. Elma was predeceased by her brother, Ben, and by her soulmate and love of her life, Mickey. Elma's love, wisdom, and dignity will be forever remembered by her sister Grace Heyding; four children, Donna Topham, Wendy (Kim) Johnson, Judy Rencz, and Gord (Spring) Cochrane; and by her six grandchildren, Colin, Bryan, Gibson, Mikey, Robbie, and Sydney; and her great-grandson Carter. Her warmth and humor will be missed by many others whose lives she touched, especially her devoted niece, Joan Woods. She spent every moment she could with them. Her home and her heart were always open and everyone felt welcome. Life is all about choices, and Elma always chose kindness. She loved unconditionally and without reserve. Elma met the physical challenges of Parkinson's Disease and Macular Degeneration with tremendous courage, and always without complaint. Her memory has now become a wonderful treasure that we will forever hold in our hearts. A small reception will be held in her memory for close friends and family on Sunday, February 3, 2013 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Garrison Green Seniors Community, 3028 Don Ethell Boulevard S.W., Calgary. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the charity of your choice. The family would like to extend their deep gratitude to those members of Garrison Green staff who provided extraordinary and compassionate care for Elma. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In living memory of Elma Cochrane, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
