BLOCK, Kyle Alfonso
June 11, 1987 - February 17, 2013
It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of Kyle Alfonso Block at the age of 25 years. Kyle died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Sunday, February 17 in Saskatoon. He was much loved and will be greatly missed by his family, his many friends, and the teammates he played with during his long and high-level hockey career on teams such as the Junior A Yorkton Terriers and the UBC Thunderbirds. Kyle grew up in Calgary and graduated from William Aberhart High School. He attended the University of British Columbia where he received top honours in the faculties of Engineering and Economics. He excelled academically and was currently studying law at the University of Saskatchewan. Kyle was a strapping man who lived large and never followed the pack. He actively pursued his passion for both hockey and music; he performed on stage with his band the weekend before his death and his line scored the winning goal in a double over- time, season-saving game the evening prior to his passing. Known for his quick wit and kind heart, Kyle was committed to equality and social justice. His piercing sky-blue eyes were coupled with a warm and adventurous spirit. Above all, he deeply loved, and was fiercely loyal to, his family and friends. Kyle is survived by his loving parents Anne-Marie and Randy, his brothers Joel and Greg, grandmothers Dorothy and Leah, and a large extended family. For those wishing to pay their respects, a Visitation will be held in the Chapel of Mountain View Funeral Home on Sunday, February 24, 2013 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Kyle's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, February 25 at St. Andrew's United Church (924 Heritage Drive S.W.). In honour of Kyle and his passion for hockey, music, and equal opportunity for all, we have established a scholarship to help under-privileged youth achieve their dreams in hockey or music. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes may be directed to The Kyle Block Scholarship Fund by cheque or on-line at The Calgary Foundation, Suite 700, 999 - 8 Street S.W., Calgary, AB T2R 1J5 (www.thecalgaryfoundation.org).
