RUSSELL, Lawrence McDonald
April 17, 1919 - February 23, 2013
Lawrence Russell passed away peacefully in the Southwood Care Centre on February 23, 2013 at the age of 93 years. He is survived by his children, sons, Lawrence Allan Russell of Calgary, Alberta and Gordon Douglas Russell of Okotoks, Alberta; granddaughter, Kerry Lynn Russell of Winnipeg, Manitoba; grandson Michael John (Diane) Russell and great-granddaughter Frankie Lynn Russell, all of Eckville, Alberta. Also surviving him are his sister, Joan Casey of Calgary, Alberta and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews across Canada and the United States. Lawrence was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Violet, on May 22, 2009. Lawrence was born on April 17, 1919 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. He went to school there and then joined the Army with The Regina Rifles in 1936, serving overseas in World War II and remaining with the Canadian Armed Forces for 30 years, attaining the rank of Major. He served with the PPCLI, the First and Third Guards Units of Canada and with the United Nations Peace Keeping Corps. He lived in several locations in Canada and also in Germany for two years. He loved good music and songs with clever lyrics, a lovely melody and great rhythm. He also enjoyed photography and was a fine photographer, and had amassed a huge collection of pictures and slides from all over the world.
