Muriel Young, beloved wife of John Young for 59 happy years, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 1, 2013 at the age of 83. Muriel was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 11, 1929 and grew up in Coatbridge, Scotland. Muriel was a lady with many professions over the years; an office clerk, secretary and a police woman in Scotland. She married John Young and immigrated to Toronto, ON in 1953 then to Calgary in 1955 where she worked in the legal profession until going to university where she got her Bachelor of Education at the age of 59 years. She was a substitute teacher. She was a member of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church for over 50 years where she was an Elder, Sunday School Teacher, Leader in the junior section of The Boys Brigade. A Girl Guide Leader in the Fairview Community. She volunteered at the Rockyview Hospital as a Pastoral Care visitor. Muriel will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 59 years, John; daughter and son-in-law, Joh-Ann and Mark Brae; granddaughters she adored Makenna and Kaila; sisters-in-law Isabel Clark of Calgary and Helen Burnett and family in Scotland. Muriel was predeceased by her daughter Ruth. A Graveside Service will be held in the Garden of the Last Supper at Mountain View Memorial Gardens (17 Avenue and Garden Road S.E., Calgary) today, March 8, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (703 Heritage Drive S.W., Calgary, AB T2V 2W4) today, March 8, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or directly to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, No. 204, 1608 - 17 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2T 0E3 (Phone 403-255-7100, The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and the palliative care team at the Rockyview General Hospital and also our family Dr. Kelly Young.
