BARKER, Allan James
December 25, 1920 - February 11, 2014
Allan James Barker, the second son of Will and Mabel Barker, was born on Christmas Day, 1920 in the family home near Janet on the land his father homesteaded in 1900. Educated in the Janet and Rockland rural schools, he moved to the city in the fall of 1939. One of his first jobs was with the UFA Co-op store on 11 Avenue and 1 Street East, which later became the first store of the Calgary Co-op stores as we know them today. He started a 25 year radio broadcasting career in 1941 as an announcer at CJCJ followed by announcing, sales and management positions at CFAC, CKY (Winnipeg), CKXL Calgary and finally as co-founder and manager of Calgary's first FM station CHFM-FM from 1961 to 1966. His second career as a Chartered Life Underwriter, licensed with London Life Insurance, lasted 20 years, until his retirement in 1985. Music was an important part of his life and community involvement. He was a chorister for years with Wesley and Central United Churches. As an avid RV'er for 40 consecutive years, 2000 days and nights spent mostly in Alberta and BC - he loved "roughing" it in style. Father to Lois, Murray and Christine. Grandfather to Adrienne, Graham, Joseph, Megan (Christian), Alison and Claire. Great-grandfather to Lucas and father-in-law to Michael. Allan was predeceased by his beloved wife Nita Anne Barker (nee Graham).
