GILKES, Margaret (nee Sadler)
Margaret Gilkes passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the age of 97 years. Maggie was the youngest of five children whose parents emigrated from South Africa to Canada in 1909 and settled in Strathmore on a farm. In 1941, Maggie joined the Canadian Women's Army Corps where she served as a motor transport driver for four and a half years. She was posted in London shortly after "D" Day and drove through the "V" bomb raids. On her return to Canada in 1946, Maggie joined the Calgary Police Force and became one of the city's first policewomen. Fifteen years later she left the force upon her marriage to widowed Sergeant of Detective's Gordon (Gobbo) Gilkes. Maggie became mother to Gordon's four children, Dave, Pat, Sharon and Denise. She became a published author, which included two novels and many other works. Maggie remains an inspiration. She was the best of friends and a true leader. Maggie loved horses, dogs and the Calgary Stampede. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Gilkes; parents, Thomas and Annie Sadler; brothers, Reginald, Bill and Serres; sister, Ann Boon; grandson, Thomas Hans and granddaughter, Linda Gilkes. Maggie leaves behind her loving family: Dave and Pat Gilkes, Pat and Laurence Verhegge, Denise and Monty Hans, Sharon Gilkes and Libby Chase as well as many nephews, great- nephews, nieces, great-nieces, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family expresses a special thank you to all the staff in Normandy House at the Colonel Belcher for their kindness and professionalism.
