Calvin McCLARY Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Dec. 3 to Dec. 5, 2016.

McCLARY, Calvin Thomas, P.Eng.
Calvin McClary, beloved husband of Robin Randers, passed away unexpectedly on November 30, 2016. Cal was born to William and Joan McClary (nee Beecroft) on July 17, 1955 in Calgary. He graduated from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir School in 1973, obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture from the University of Washington in 1980, and a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management from Stanford University in 1986.
Calvin is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Robin Lee Randers; children Martha, William, and Casey Randers McClary and their partners, of whom Cal was especially fond, Jesse Sturk, Kathryn Raina, and Emilie Mazurek; his new grandson Louis Christian McClary; his brother Michael McClary (Shirley); sister Jennifer Fulford; mother-in-law Shirley Randers; and a wealth of nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he cared for deeply. His personal and professional networks run wide and deep, a result of years of hard work balanced with good times and a genuine interest in the wellbeing of everyone he encountered.
Calvin literally left his mark on the many places he lived during his career as a Professional Engineer, with bridges, dams, skyscraper basements, sewers and other projects bearing his stamp across western North America. He was proud of his team at ISL Engineering and Land Services, having helped grow the Calgary office since his start in 2004, and being appointed a Director in 2010. Cal's notable projects include the Twin Falls Hydroelectric Project, South San Francisco sewer, Stoney Trail Bridge, rehabilitation of the 25th Avenue Bridge following the 2013 floods, the Glenmore Trail and 37th Street overpass, and most recently, long term flood mitigation planning for the Calgary Zoo.
Calvin also brought his work home with him, completing renovations and landscaping at home, for his kids, and at the family farm in Olds. A project manager at heart, he loved working on (directing) projects with his family, and his honest, practical advice will be greatly missed. Cal sought out adventures, and enjoyed many wonderful trips in recent years with Robin, the kids, and his friends. The trips were well documented through Calvin's love of photography, though he came home with pictures mostly of bridges and excavators. He loved music and the arts, having played trombone in the jazz band, while also serving as president of the Westwinds Music Society. Cal knew the true measure of his wealth was in the happiness that he left in his wake, and though he left us far too soon, he left a wealthy man.
In honour of Dad's memory, the family will appreciate tributes in the form of donations to the United Way of Calgary and Area, or the Calgary Stampede Foundation, the latter of which Calvin appreciated for their ability to throw a great party, while also keeping his children out of trouble. A memorial service will be held this Thursday, December 8, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Eden Brook Funeral Home.
Condolences may be forwarded by visiting www.edenbrookcemetery.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Eden Brook Funeral Home 24223 Township Road 242 T3Z 3K2.

I am sad to hear of Calvin's sudden passing. I haven't seen Calvin for several years, since our last STS reunion. I will always remember him as a good solid jovial guy....with a fast lime green car, of course. Rest in Peace my old friend.

I was sorry to hear of the loss of a great individual.Having worked with Cal a distinct notable difference with Cal that made Cal stand out from others is the fact that where ever you stood on the corporate ladder made no difference to him as he treated everyone with the same respect and dignity, Not too many like him will be missed.
