William SELBY Obituary

Published by Calgary Herald from Sep. 13 to Sep. 14, 2017.
SELBY, William (Bill) Ernest
October 16, 1929 – September 11, 2017
On September 11, 2017, our wonderful father William. E. (Bill) Selby left this world to join our mother in heaven after a life of service to the community, devotion to family and dedication to his church. Bill was born in Calgary on October 16, 1929, the son of Lieutenant Colonel Doctor E.R. Selby and Laura Selby. After his schooling in Calgary, he attended The University of Alberta to study science and then Law. He had a long professional career in the oil industry, rising to corporate secretary of Hudson's Bay Oil and Gas and Dome Petroleum followed by a second career as Vice President of Community Relations and Special Advisor to the President of The University of Calgary. Bill was a tireless fundraiser and supporter of many causes with his wife Mary including serving on the boards of the Calgary Zoo, The Alberta Motor Association, The Canadian Automobile Association (Chairman), The Whyte Museum in Banff, the Association of Mountain Parks Protection and Enjoyment, The Calgary Parks Foundation and many others. A raconteur with a devilish sense of humour, a booming baritone voice and a deep infectious laugh, Bill was loved and respected by all who knew him. Possessed of great physical strength and vigour, Bill travelled the world bringing back pictures and stories to stimulate a new generation of travellers. His favourite place, however, was "El Nido" the family cottage in Banff and the surrounding mountains that he explored on foot and as a young driver for Brewster Bus Lines. Bill's greatest love was his family and he derived joy in many hours spent in the company of his children and grandchildren imparting the lessons of a life well lived. Bill was predeceased by his wife Mary, the love of his life, in 2000 and by his brother Ray in 2009. Bill is survived by his children John (Patricia), Gillian (Gordon) and Jennifer (Michael) and by his grandchildren Jack, Maia, Matthew, Connor, Oliver and Harrison. He is also lovingly remembered by his sister-in-law Betty Selby, his nephew and nieces, Charles, Cathy and Beth, their families and his cousin Sylvia Ommanney. The family would like to thank Maison Senior Living for the care and friendship he experienced these last few years. A Memorial Services will be held at Christ Church Anglican (3602-8 Street SW) on Saturday, September 16, 2017 at 1:30 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made in support of the Mary Selby Scholarship, c/o The Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary. Bill hired me as I graduated from UofC in 1973 for a summer job writing for the HBOG publications. I got to drive and fly around the province and at the end of the summer he took me for lunch at a club. He was a supportive boss and great to work for. That job led to two others and inspired me to get more into photography. Good memories of him.

Bill was a lovely man,had a wonderful booming voice. He was kind and not one too look down on people. I know he had a great family and they should be very proud of his legacy.

I knew Bill from the 1980's when we worked together at the U of C. I remember him as unfailingly kind and generous. Just a really good guy. He will be missed. My condolences to Bill's family and close friends.

Bill was our partner in all things Rotary --- he did as he always did bring strong support - After his last little dustup with his car on the way to/from(?) Jasper, I had the privilege of ferrying him oncassion after our Rotary meetings. We talked cars (he and I both liked Mercedes! and grandkids and politics) Such great fun and too short an opportunity for BIG discussions but lots of time to learn quickly about his huge scope of interests and his absolute delight with those grandkids. Our Rotary Club misses Bill and I sure do miss those lovely chats. My thoughts are with you all. WE have lost a dear friend........

Bill was a wonderful neighbor and friend. He was a kindhearted gentleman with a heart of gold. I cannot help but believe that he has finally been reunited with Mary in heaven. May both their kind souls rest in peace... Love Janice

All of us at The Boys and Girls Clubs of Calgary are saddened to hear about Bill's passing. We all worked so closely with Mary and then, only in Bill's style, did he step up to the plate and start raising much needed dollars for the kids. We will miss you Bill. Our thoughts are with you John, Jen and Gillian.

Mr Selby was a Kind,Gentle,Reliable man. He was our advisor for Junior Achievement and then again an advisor for AIESEC Calgary. I thought of him many times over the past few years as a model for always giving tasks to busy people because they would get it done! His involvement with bringing one trainee to HBOG set up a lifelong friendship with my husband and I and a couple from Sweden. Thanks Mr Selby!

Jim and I were both saddened to hear of your loss of dear Bill. We had the wonderful opportunity to share many fun times with him when he came to visit Syl on Salt Spring Island. We ate food in the dark, cooked on a wood stove and shared champagne in Cowichan Bay. He was a fun and entertaining man. He will be missed. Hugs to you all.
