Robert Hibbs Obituary

The Rt. Rev. Robert B. Hibbs

San Antonio, TX

The Rt. Rev. Robert B. Hibbs, retired Bishop Suffragan of the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas, died in San Antonio on Monday, April 17, 2017. Bishop Hibbs was born on April 20, 1932 in Philadelphia PA., baptized April 30, 1933, confirmed April 9, 1942, ordained deacon on June 24, 1957, ordained priest December 21, 1957, and consecrated bishop on January 6, 1996.

Following his graduation from General Theological Seminary in 1957, Bishop Hibbs began his ministry in Toronto, Ontario while pursuing his graduate work. For fifteen years, he was on the faculty of St. Andrews Theological Seminary, Quezon City, Philippines where he served as a faculty member, Sub-Dean and later Dean. Later, he also served on the faculty of the Seminary of the Southwest, Austin, TX. For five years Bishop Hibbs served in the Diocese of Northwest Texas as Vicar of St Peters, Borger, then Vicar/Rector of St. Stephens, Lubbock. In 1988, he finally arrived in the Diocese of West Texas, serving first at St. Barnabas, Fredericksburg, as Rector, then at the Church of the Good Shepard Corpus Christi, as Assistant Rector. As Bishop Suffragan, his particular passions included Recovery Ministries, both in the diocese and with the National Church; and the Cursillo movement.

Upon retirement as Bishop Suffragan, it was his joy to spend hours reading, listening to classical music and cheering on the Missions baseball team. He was active as a member of the Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty. In addition, his gift of listening encouraged many to use him as mentor and spiritual director.

Bishop Hibbs is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Joane Alexander Hibbs, his son David, daughter Lisa (Charley White, Jr), five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at St. Mark's Episcopal Church on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11 am. Memorial gifts can be made to DWTX Recovery Ministries or the Cursillo Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choosing.

Dearest Nancy, our hearts grieve with you at the loss of "Thunder" Bob, as Steve called him. Bob led the first Recovery retreat we attended in October, 1997. When we left that Sunday, Steve said "I'm going to be OK", and, Praise God, he has been as he just celebrated his 20th AA birthday on April 8th. We are sure Bob and his message had a similar impact on many others. We love you an hold you up in prayer.
