Bernadine Josephine Harrison, 92, passed away peacefully while holding her Granddaughter's hand, January 26th 2013. She was born April 22nd, 1920, in Detroit Michigan to Charles and Celeste Weitzel. Bernie went to St. James School in Ferndale Ml, and later met her future husband Charles Merritt Harrison Jr. while working as a car-hop at Andy's Drive Inn. They went together for 2 years, and then married in St. James Church on June 10th, 1940. They had 4 children, and moved west to California to raise their family. Bernie loved to work, always serving people, and when they moved to Colorado in 1973, she was proud to be a waitress at the Peterson Air Force Base Officer's Club. She really enjoyed being around others and this was her way to get out, meet exciting people, and have fun while poising class and professionalism. Bernie and husband Charlie decided to retire in Michigan where most of their siblings still resided, so they moved back home in 1983, and absolutely loved living in Madison Heights Co-op Apartments. She liked to read and work on crafts, was a floor rep, worked on the Education, Inspection, Election, Kitchen and Arts'Crafts committees. Outside of that she enjoyed going to garage sales with her sisters, gambling in Canada, and she was a member of the Elks Club with her husband. Michigan was where Bernie stayed even after the passing of her husband of 58 years until coming back to Colorado and residing in Canon City for the past 21/2 years. Baking apple pies, and crocheting afghans for everyone she knew, she loved her 3rd story view from Garden Park Villa. Bernie truly appreciated the beauty of Colorado and all of the people she met while getting out to go "Shopping" every Wednesday. She will miss the Village Inn, Goodwill, and especially the "Baby Doctor", Dr. Mark Sindler who she tried to convince that she wasn't pregnant! Quick witted, and always ready to tell a joke, you knew you were special if you walked into a room and Bernie said, "I know you!" Many thanks goes to Jeannie Rector from St. Michael's home bound ministry for giving Bernadine Communion every Monday, and for telling us that she wanted her family to know, "She loved everybody". Bernadine is survived by her four children; Richa'rd Harrison, Colo. Springs, Ron (Sandy) Harrison, Florissant, Diane (Bobby) Gagnon, Florissant, and Sharon (Gary) Materi, CA; sister, Nancy (Lee) Miller, MI; brother, Charles Weitzel, MS; nieces, Cathy and Jean Jump, MI. She has 10 grandchildren, Sherry Adamson, MO, Fawn Jackson, Colo. Springs, Andrea Mayberry, CA, Keith Harrison, AZ, Jennifer Hayes, Canon City, Brian Harrison, Divide, Richard Clark, CA, Mike Clark, CA, Alicia Materi, CA, and Danny Materi, CA. She has 15 great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Her ashes will be spread at a later date with her family in attendance. In lieu of flowers contributions are encouraged to Fremont Regional Hospice, 1439 Main Street, Canon City, CO 81212, who provided such wonderful assistance, care and patience in her time of need. Thank you Sunny and Cindy, and everyone on call, for all of your help, you made her journey back home a peaceful one. Arrangements handled through Holt Family Funeral Home.
