Harold Craig Obituary

Harold Lee Craig, 86, of Canon City, was called home by the Lord on August 21, 2013. He was born December 17, 1926 in Greer County, OK to LeRoy and Zada (McGill) Craig. Harold moved to Canon City in 1931, and became a lifelong resident. He attended the old Washington elementary, Wilson Junior High, and the old Canon City High School, where he met his future wife, Lillie May Land. After the outbreak of WWII, Harold had the calling to serve his country; but being too young, he had to wait until he was 17. During his senior year in 1943, he left school to join the Army Air Corps. He trained at Keesler Army Airfield in Biloxi, Mississippi and was later stationed at Elmendorf Field in Anchorage, Alaska as an aircraft mechanic where he attained the rank of Corporal. After the war, Harold was honorably discharged and returned to Canon City where he married his sweetheart, Lillie May in 1946. He and his father opened Roy's Tru-Tred Tire Shop in 1946, which he continued to run with his own son until he retired in 1996. Over the years, Harold along with his father built a 21 foot cabin cruiser and cabins at Twin Lakes and Lake Deweese. They designed and completed various other projects, including a homemade snow cat and a jet ski. Harold was a member of the First Christian Church where he, along with his wife, sang in the choir. He was also a member of the American Legion, Boy Scouts of America, and served as the Captain of the Fremont County Search and Rescue. Harold enjoyed traveling in his motor home around the country with his family and friends. He also enjoyed four-wheeling, camping, motorcycling, photography, lapidary and jewelry making, music and dancing, boating, water skiing, fishing, playing cards, and 'cb' radios where he was known at "Slim Jim". Most of all, he loved spending time with his family. Mr. Craig is survived by his wife of 66 years, Lillie May; daughter, Carol (Will) Smith; and son, Duane (Kathy) Craig all of Canon City; five grandchildren, Tina Fay of Colorado City, Shawn Wells of Canon City, Kim (Brian) Rupp of Canon City, Doug (Rebecca) Craig of Grants Pass, Oregon, Rick (Theresa) Craig of Canon City; ten great grandchildren, Gaven and Reyn Moore, Abigail and Alyssa Rupp, Shelby Wells and Jessica Sharkey, Caitlin and Brandon Craig, and Catrina and Hunter Craig. Harold also leaves behind his many, many longtime friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother-in-law, Tom and Ida Land; and cousins, Ron Wright and Ralph Jones. Visitation will be held from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m., prior to the Funeral Service at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 27, 2013 at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City. Interment will follow at Lakeside Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.holtfamilyfuneral homes.com

I have great memories of Harold and Lillie Mae. They treated me as family, taking me camping and water skiing, along with other activities in and around their home. He and his dad always enthralled me on all the "gadgets" they had made. Harold, you truly was a great person! Gale Smith
