Stephen Schuh

SCHUH, Stephen Frank; of Canon City, Colorado passed away November 9, 2013, at home surrounded by his loving family. He was diagnosed with an Fibrilary Astrocytoma of the Brain Stem, November 6, 2008, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Steve was born June 15, 1947, at the Salvation Army Home in St. Paul, Minnesota as Gregory Lynn Hjelming. On July 1, 1947, Steve came to live with Edward and Margery Schuh, who preceded Steve in their passing, and their adopted daughter, Jennifer Simonson of New Brighton, Minnesota. Steve's adoption was finalized July 23, 1948. Raised in Northeast, Minneapolis, Steve attended Waite Park Elementary, Northeast Junior High and Edison High School, graduating in 1965. Steve attended the University of Minnesota enrolled in Pre-Veterinary medicine and later enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Steve was a pediatric and emergency room corpsman and a member of SAC's emergency world wide deployment team. On September 14, 1968, Steve married Jane Renae Ketterling of Columbia Heights, Minnesota. She survives as do their daughters Kristen Marie (Alan) Teague and Stacy Leigh (Ryan) Gordon. Grandchildren include Dylan Bursha, Joslyn Gordon, Izzabelle Gordon, Gabrielle (Gabby) Wills, Matthew (Matty) Wills, Michael Gordon, D. J. Gordon, and Megan Grisenti. All were the love of his life. Steve was especially proud of Kristen and her adopted children for carrying on the adoption tradition of the family. Sister, Jennifer Simonsen, nieces and nephews in Minnesota also survive. Steve caddied at Midland Hills Country Club and worked at Ekberg Pharmacy and Hypro Pump Company as a teenager. Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Steve was employed at St. Anthony Hospital Systems surgical department in Denver. As a Physician's Assistant Steve was employed at Foothills Orthopedic Associates in Wheat Ridge, Colorado and the Colorado Department of Corrections in Canon City, Colorado. Steve retired in July, 2003 as the Custody/Control Manager of the Colorado State Penitentiary. In retirement Steve delivered meals for Meals On Wheels, served on the Fremont County Crime Stoppers board and the Shadow Hills Golf Club Board of Directors. He was a former president of, and active in, the Royal Gorge Lions Club. Throughout his illness Steve never complained, and was so appreciative of the care he received from his loving wife Jane, long time friend Dr. Joseph McGarry and the staff at Sangre de Cristo Hospice. His love and devotion for his family and friends will remain his lasting legacy. Cremation was handled through Wilson Funeral Home with interment in the veterans section of Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City. A Celebration of Life will be held November 14, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church, 801 Sheridan Ave., Canon City, CO.
