Dorothy A. "Dot" Zabrusky, 89, passed away February 3, 2014 in Canon City, CO. She was born November 30, 1924 to Michael and Helen (Vavra) Zabrusky. Dorothy grew up in South Canon City. She and her 7 siblings picked cherries and radishes for the Thomas Kirkton Gardens while they were still in school. After graduation from Canon City High School, she went to Colorado Springs and attended Seton School of Nursing. She graduated from there as a Registered Nurse. In 1943, during World War II, she became a member of the Cadet Nursing Corp and served in Montana. The more than 150,000 WWII Cadet Nurses went to school for accelerated training at the hospital and then put heir skills to immediate use to keep the "civilian hospitals open", filling the void when many nurses were sent to the front lines to care for the troops. Upon her return to Colorado she went to work at Pueblo's St. Mary Corwin Hospital assisting as a registered nurse in the operating room. Dorothy lived in Pueblo for many years. Her favorite restaurant was LaTronica's where she made many friends with both patrons and staff. She left the hospital to become the office nurse for Dr. George Cribari for many years. When her sister, Betty, told Dot of an opening with the Bell Telephone System in Colorado Springs for someone to open and operate a clinic for the employees of "Ma Bell", she under took that challenge. She maintained that clinic until she retired. She and her sister, Betty, lived in Colorado Springs for many years and were faithful parishioners at St. Joseph's South Gate Church. They both returned to Canon City, their hometown, when health concerns became apparent. Dorothy was one of eight children and is preceded in death by John Zabrusky, Rudy Zabrusky, Martha Zabrusky, Mary Ann (Johnson) Zabrusky, Bernard Zabrusky, Ed Zabrusky, and Frances Zabrusky. She is survived by her sister, Betty, who cared for Dorothy over the past years as Dot's health declined. Dorothy is also survived by sister-in-law, Betty Jo (Bunky) Zabrusky; nephews, George E. Johnson and Kenneth Zabrusky; nieces, Pat McFarland, Kathy Humphrey, Kris Zabrusky; and several great and great-great nieces and nephews. Recitation of the Rosary will be prayed at 9:30 a.m., prior to Funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Canon City, CO.
