Edna Soester Obituary
Edna Florence (Hamaker) Soester passed away March 13, 2014 in Canon City at her home of 67 years at the age of 95. She was born June 26, 1918 in Hot Springs, SD to Mable and Paul Hamaker. Edna was the third of 7 children, 4 sisters and 2 brothers. Edna is survived by her daughter, Karen (Larry) McCord of Lindsay, CA; son, Lowell (Winifred) Soester of Canon City, CO; grandson, Mack (Leslie) McCord of Oro Valley, AZ; sister, Frances Locker of Crawford, NE; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 40 years, Russell Soester; brothers, Paul and Jerry Hamaker; and sisters, Pauline Fjelstad, Betty Ruffing, and Aline Dyer. Raised on a ranch in western Nebraska, Edna rode to school on horseback with her sisters. She attended Chadron State College and later received her BA from Western State College in Gunnison, CO. Edna taught in Nebraska then moved to Canon City with her family in 1947 where she continued teaching for another 35 years. Retiring in 1983 from teaching at the middle school for over 20 years, Edna worked for a number of years with her son, Lowell, operating a seasonal perennial plant nursery. Edna enjoyed reading, bird watching, cooking, and entertaining friends and family. Travel was also of great interest to her. She was a member of several community organizations during her teaching career and later enjoyed her membership in retired teachers' association. Edna also volunteered with the reading program in the school district after her retirement. Special thanks to Sangre de Cristo Hospice and Innovage for all their loving care, kindness, and support. Memorial service will be at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, March 20, 2014 at the Wilson Funeral Home Chapel in Canon City.
