She graduated from St Anthony's Catholic School and attended North Eastern Junior College in Sterling. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents William and Helen Truitt; step mother Eva (Barton) Truitt; brothers William "Bay" Truitt, Robert Truitt; sister Kathleen (Kay) (Cantonwine) Masters; step brother Johnny Barton and nephew Gerry Cantonwine. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 52 years Wilbur "Willy" Johnson; daughters Shirley Jeanne Forberg (Anthony Jackson), Kay (Bob) Diehl and Helen Darling (Mac Fortson), all of Canon City, CO She had six grandchildren she adored; Dawn (Alex) Kaseoru, Sedona, AZ; John Palumbo (Phyl Ferraresi), Omaha, NE; Gina Garris, Denver, CO; Luke Darling, Newport Beach, CA; Matthew Darling, Canon City, CO and Jake Darling, Canon City, CO. Shirley had six great grandchildren she loved; Ashley Palumbo, Sierra Palumbo, Laurel Roberts, Carianne Kaseoru, Trystan Kaseoru, and Serra Kaseoru. She was also lucky to be a great great grandmother to Riley Ann Weyers, Kylee Steffani and Jeremiah Steffani. Shirley also leaves behind several nephews and nieces that she loved. Shirley married her first husband Edwin G. Forberg (Lt. Col.) in La Junta, CO while she was working for Western Union. Being a military family, they lived in several states including Virginia, Louisiana and Texas. She was active in supporting her daughters' lives serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader. Shirley and her daughters eventually moved to Colorado where she rekindled a high school relationship with Willy Johnson. Willy gladly accepted his new responsibility and role of being a loving father to three young girls and the couple was married in Denver, CO in April of 1960. Careers found them in Colorado, Arizona and California. Shirley and Willy lived in San Diego (Pacific Beach), CA for over 30 years. While living the beach life of never ending sunsets they formed and nurtured numerous lasting relationships with many dear friends. Fun times were spent waiting for the sunset, fireworks over Mission Bay, trips to Vegas with special friends, adopting all her neighbors as family members and hosting football parties at the beach; Shirley so loved the Broncos and Chargers. Every holiday was a special event where all neighbors, friends or anyone and everyone off the street/beach were welcome to come share a meal with them. Shirley loved the time she shared with her sister Kay; for many years they would spend fun-filled days making Easter baskets for every neighbor and friend. Eight years ago Shirley and Willy moved to Canon City to be closer to their children. They so did not want to leave the beach but their lives quickly began to blossom by having her daughters close by. She enjoyed living at their new home and cherished her new neighbors and friends like Jean, Clara and Wanda. Shirley was an avid reader, loved music, mostly country-western and looked forward to her daily afternoon Scrabble game with daughter Kay. We will truly miss her. Shirley's family would like to thank Dr. Michael Banker and his staff and the staff of Progressive Care Center for taking such good care of her; we are very grateful. At Shirley's request there will be no service. Cremation arrangements handled through Holt Family Funeral Home. Online condolences @ www.holtfamilyfuneral homes.com
