J.C. Powers Obituary
J. C. "Jay" Powers died at his home in Canon City, Colorado on January 14, 2014, at the age of 88, following a lengthy illness. He was born Joy Cluster Powers on January 22, 1925 to John Berry Powers, and Daisy Pearl (Sasser) Powers in Lexington, Cleveland County, Oklahoma. The family moved to Colorado in 1936 when J.C. was 11 years old and homesteaded in Florence where he attended school, graduating from Florence High School in 1945. He later moved to Canon City where he met and married Ruth Jenilee Irvin on August 22, 1950. J.C. served in the Army and was stationed at Ft. Bliss. He worked in Canon City as a serviceman for Greeley Gas Company for 33 1/2 years. Family was very important to J.C. as well as his church family. He always enjoyed music and sang with his cousin, N.G. Sasser on The Shorty Sasser Show on KRLN Radio in the 1950's. He restored old cars, and enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, riding ATV's, and traveling in his motorhome. J.C. always had a garden. One of his favorite activities in later years was attending bluegrass gospel jam sessions, and he was always accompanied by his Boston Terrier AT, and later on Eli, at his side. He enjoyed his friends at the coffee shop. J.C. lived a full life, loving his family, and serving the Lord. J.C. was preceded in death by his father, John B. Powers (February 20, 1987); his mother, Daisy P. Powers (July 27, 1988); his wife of 42 years, Ruth J. Powers (January 31, 1993); and his sister, Helen Colleen Beach (November 2, 2008). He is survived by his son, Ron G. (Eileen) Powers; daughter, J. Janine (Joe) Cristelli all of Canon City; granddaughter, Ronett M. Powers of Littleton, CO; and grandson, Navan J. Powers of Houston, TX. He will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends. Viewing for family and friends will be from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the Wilson Funeral Home at 1449 S. 9th Street in Canon City. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 22, 2014 (J.C.'s birthday) at Canon Community Baptist Church at 1111 Monroe Avenue in Canon City, with Pastor David Almanzar officiating. Interment will follow the service at Lakeside Cemetery, with a noon lunch reception to follow at the church on Monroe Avenue. Arrangements are under the care of Wilson Funeral Home.
