John Gribben Obituary
John Louis Gribben of Cañon City, Colorado, passed away Friday, November 16, 2012, in Florence, Colorado. Born June 1, 1955, in Alamosa, Colorado, John was 57 years old. A 1973 graduate of Florence High School, John graduated from the University of Southern Colorado in 1977 with a degree in history and education. He taught and coached for several years before settling into life as a coal miner here in Fremont County, a job he held for 17 years. He later worked as manager at the local Pepsi Distributing Warehouse. He was a life-long resident of Colorado, with most of those years spent in Fremont County. John cared deeply for others and spent his life helping where he could. His greatest love was reserved for his family, especially his children, Shannah Gribben of Las Vegas, Nevada; Jessica Gribben of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and Marine PFC Robert Gribben, currently stationed in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. John was incredibly proud of his children, and his favorite pastime was watching them play sports and dance as they grew up, especially throughout their high school years. In addition to his children, he also is survived by his parents, Tom and Barbara Gribben of Florence; brother Tom (Lois) Gribben of Pueblo; sister Janet (Richard) Fischer and their daughter, Kinsey, of Colorado Springs; nephew Scott (Allison) Gribben of Redondo Beach, California, and their son, Jake; and niece Stacie (Scott) DeHerrera of Fort Collins, Colorado. John also is survived by many long-time friends, including Lisa Petty and Judy Shepherd-Falgien of Cañon City. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kathryn Lynn Gribben, who passed away at the age of 4. Funeral services are scheduled at 11 a.m. Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at the Elks Lodge 611, 131 E. Front St., Florence, the Rev. Dennis Sillaman officiating. A reception with lunch will follow at the lodge. John chose cremation; his cremains will be privately interred at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements handled through Charles Anthony Funeral Home.
