Marilyn Knox Obituary
Marilyn ended a remarkable life after a courageous battle with cancer. Born in Canon City, CO to Peter A. Young and A. Idell McCrory Young, she was a proud third generation Fremont County native, growing up in Cotopaxi riding horses, sewing and singing. She attended Western State College on a vocal music scholarship, married, and graduated with honors. She taught music in Denver, Canon City and the Holy Cross Abbey. She was elected Fremont County Superintendant of Schools in 1965. She then returned to Western State to earn two Masters Degrees in Guidance and Counseling and Special Education again graduating with honors and a 4.0 average. Returning to Cotopaxi she served as Guidance Counselor for four years then spent seventeen years in Albuquerque New Mexico teaching Special Education at Rio Grande High School. She had a wonderful group of friends in Albuquerque where she shared her many interests playing Bridge, gardening (they called her the "frustrated farmer"), crafts and music. She also enjoyed being a "Red Hat Lady" in Denver and Howard. She shared her gift of song throughout her life singing for the Central City Opera, a reception for Governor John Love, and many weddings and special occasions for friends. She participated in the Manzanita Chapter of Eastern Star chorus - "Harmoneers" and was a 55 year member of the Topaz Chapter of Eastern Star, Salida, Colorado. She enjoyed traveling visiting New Zealand, Fiji, Tahiti, Hawaii, Alaska, Europe, the Caribbean and Mexico. Her proudest moments included watching each of her three children graduate from College and beyond and the birth of her twin grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Robin Knox, her children Gina (Rufus), Jolene (Sammi and Dane - twins), and Ron, her brother Thomas A. Young (Betsy and Tomalee - nieces), many other family members and loyal, devoted friends. She is predeceased by her parents and brothers - Peter and Charles. She will be missed. Graveside services will be Saturday, August 31, 2013 at 10:30 AM, Cotopaxi Cemetary. Arrangements entrusted to Harwood Funeral Service.
