Melba Stallman Obituary
Melba "Mitch" Stallman, 97, passed away June 15, 2014 in Canon City, CO. She was born June 2, 1917 in Butte, Montana to Ed and Melba (Davies) Mitchell. Mitch was raised in the small mining town of Roundup, Montana during the depression. She earned her Bachelors degree in English from the University of Montana in 1939. From 1941 to 1945, during WWII, she was the secretary to the General at Williams Field Air Force Base in Mesa, Arizona. She met Ralph Stallman at the base and they were married on June 20, 1945. From 1945 to 1950, they lived in Rolla, Missouri, where Ralph earned his engineering degree. Then from 1950 through 1958, they lived in Fulton, MO, and in 1958 moved to Canon City. In 1973, they moved to Denver where Mitch was the secretary at the Bureau of Education and Research at the University of Denver until 1984, when they moved back to Canon City. Mitch loved bridge and was a member of various bridge clubs in Canon City. She also belonged to the Daughters of Isabella. Mrs. Stallman is survived by her sons, Chuck (Kim) Stallman and Robert Stallman both of Canon City; grandchildren; Mollie Stallman of Santa Monica, CA, Hank Stallman of Wilmer, MN, Ashley Martinez (who also took care of her grandmother for several years) of Canon City, Christina Stallman of Nashville, TN, and Jonathan Stallman of Canon City; one brother, Bill Mitchell of Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her loving caregiver and best friend, Sue Peterson of Canon City. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; brother, Ed Mitchell, and sister, Dorothy Herda. Graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m., Friday, June 20, 2014 at Lakeside Cemetery in Canon City, CO. A reception will follow at 4:00 p.m., following the graveside at Shadow Hills Golf Club.
