Her hits included the declarative blues classic, “I Am a Woman,” the suggestive romp, “Wang Dang Doodle,” from 1967 and the blues-rock number “Voodoo Woman.”

Her first two labels were legendary sound factories in their own right, and her voice, big, soft and gruff, moved easily through classic blues scales in an emotive and sometimes explosive way. Under Chess records, she collaborated with Howlin’ Wolf and songwriter Willie Dixon, and at Alligator records she recorded with Bruce Iglauer, who served as her manager and producer since 1974.
