Alice G. Shankel
age 98, of Mechanicstown, died Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 in her home with her granddaughter holding her hand. She was born April 8, 1915 in Akron to Ward and Laura Ethel (Burton) Franklin. She had been a school teacher for Canton Local Schools, Minerva Local and retired from Heritage Christian School. She was in the first graduation class of Canton South High School where she played on the high school basketball team and then went to Kent State University and graduated with a teaching degree. She is a member of the Carrollton Baptist Temple and was involved with Child Evangelism, taught Backyard Bible Club for many years and also taught Sunday school at the Fairmount Children's Home. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will deeply miss her cookies and her special birthday and special occasion cards.
She is survived by a daughter, Jean Slemboski of Canton; two sons, Daniel (Wilma) Shankel of Mechanicstown and John (Barbara) Shankel of Carmel, Ind; nine grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by a son, David Shankel; son-in- law, Clarence Slemboski; two sisters, Gladyth Hepler and Wilma McCombs and an infant grandchild.
Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. in the Carrollton Baptist Temple with Pastor David Powell officiating. Burial will be in Moultrie Chapel Cemetery. Calling hours will be Sunday 1-3 and 7-9 p.m. in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva.
