Arlene Mae Heist
age 98, passed on to be with her Lord and Savior this past Tuesday morning Dec. 10, 2013 surrounded by her family. Born on Sept. 19, 1915 in Canton to Harry and Elizabeth Bechtel, she was a dedicated school teacher, lover of music, world traveler, and devoted mother. A graduate of McKinley High School and Ashland University, Arlene devoted over 60 years of her life teaching young children in the Canton Local, Canton City, and Plain Local school districts. Organist and pianist, she enjoyed serving her church and performing at events such as weddings and school programs. She touched both young and old with her passion for music. She teamed with her late husband Edgar L. Heist, band director at Canton South high school, as a fellow educator, church choir leader, and extensive traveler across the United States and Canada. Her greatest joy was her family.
She and Ed raised three children, Kathy Naylor, Kris Parsons, and Keith Heist (Melanie). They were then blessed with six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Also is survived by her sister, Donna Barnes (David). Arlene was preceded in death by her sister, Thelma Watkins (Joseph) and two sons-in-law, Philip Naylor and Gregory Parsons. The entire family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caring and dedicated staff at Amherst Meadows and Harbor Light Hospice.
Friends may call on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. at the Beacon of Hope Community Church in Louisville with Dr. Ralph Gibson officiating. After the service all are invited to a funeral luncheon at the church. Private burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
