Burton Vernon Jones
68, of Berea, Ohio entered into eternal peace on Wednesday Jan. 02, 2013, at the
Cleveland Clinic Foundation in Cleveland, Ohio. Burton was born in Akron, Ohio, on Nov. 15, 1944, the oldest of six children born to Vivian L. Burton Jones and the late Vernon Dee Jones. He grew up in Akron, Ohio. He is a graduate of the Central High School Class of 1962. He matriculated to The University of Akron on a full academic and athletic scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Burton joined the brotherhood of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated. Burton continued his education at Southern Methodist University School of Law, Dallas, Texas, where he earned a Juris Doctorate degree in 1969; and was also the first African American male graduate of the school of law. During his years at Southern Methodist University he was the Founder and CEO of The National Association to Aid Small Businessmen, a non-profit organization. Upon graduation he joined The Timken Company in Canton, Ohio as the first African American to work in management specializing in Global Employee Labor Relations and Human Resources. Burton also established a private law practice in Massillon, Ohio, becoming Massillon's First African American Practicing Attorney while serving as the City of Massillon's Clerk of City Council. Burton continue his education at The Columbia University School of Executive Management in Ithaca, New York. Burton touched the lives of many people with his smile, generosity, council and hearty laugh. He believed in giving back to the community in various capacities and was a notable community leader in numerous civic organizations and boards throughout his entire life.
Burton was preceded in death by his father, Vernon D. Jones; maternal grandparents, Robert and Vivian Butts Burton; paternal grandparents, Dee and Jesse McKenzie Jones; sisters, Phyllis Jones Ford and Judith Jones; favorite uncles: Dr. Robert Burton, Dr. Jonathan Burton, Clarence Burton and Anthony Burton. He leaves loving memories to be cherished by daughters Celeste M. Jones of Middleburg Hts., Ohio and Elizabeth B. Jones of Canton, Ohio; mother Vivian L. Burton Jones of Merced, Calif.; brother, Warren Elliot Jones of Oak Harbor, Wash., Sandra Jones of Akron, Ohio, and Dr. Catherine Jones of Merced, Calif.; half-sisters: Lavetta Jones, Freda Jones and Laura Jones all of Cleveland, Ohio; Aunts Agnus (Thomas) Burton Augustine of Olympia Fields, Ill., Gladys Burton Gibson of Akron, Ohio, Hazel Burton Shelton of Hempstead, N.Y., Suzanne Burton Armour of Kalamazoo, Mich.; the mothers of his daughters Marva L. Jones Dodson (Celeste) of Massillon, Ohio, Marilyn Y. Thomas Jones (Elizabeth) of Canton, Ohio; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
The calling hours are on Sunday, Jan. 6, 2013, at Rhoden Memorial Home, 729 Cherry Ave. Canton, Ohio, from 4:00 p.m. -7:00 p.m., with the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated's Omega Service at 6:00 p.m. The Homegoing Celebration is Monday, Jan. 7, 2013, with calling hour at 10:00 a.m. and service at 11:00 a.m., located at the Rhoden Memorial Home, 1101 Palmetto Ave., Akron, Ohio.
