Donald Charles Baker
passed away April 25, 2013 on his 94th birthday. His life was marked with notable accomplishments in school, sports, business and family. He loved people and devoted considerable time and energies to Christian related work and activities. Born and raised in Westbury, N.Y. on Long Island, he was superb athlete in both high school (Westbury) and college (University of North Carolina). At UNC, he starred in both track and football, was Vice President of Senior Class and a member of Sigma Chi. Following college, he served as an officer with the Marines in several major World War II military campaigns in the South Pacific including Bougainville. After discharge, he began a successful professional and business career beginning with the New York State Veteran's Administration. From 1949-1964, he worked for Schrader & Son, a company specializing in tire valves. Starting as a Sales Associate in Brooklyn, N.Y., he quickly moved up to branch office Sales Manager in Akron, Ohio and then to Corporate Sales Manager back in Brooklyn. In 1964, he took a position as Sales Manager with a Scripture Press in Wheaton, Ill. But in 1968, he returned to the automotive industry in the Akron Canton area and thru 2004 held Sales positions with Eaton Corporation, Standards Testing Laboratory (STL) and Smithers' Scientific Testing. Don was active in a variety of Christian related ministries including the Canton Baptist Temple, Christian Businessmen's Committee (CBMC), Christian Radio (WCRF in Akron), Gideons International, and Plymouth Haven Baptist Church.
In late 2006, Don moved to a military retirement community near Ft. Belvoir in Northern Virginia called 'The Fairfax', where he lived until his passing. He is survived by his son, Don Jr.; and daughter, Jan. He is also survived by six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Janet, his beloved wife of more than 50 years, died in 2005.
