Howard Russell Showalter
of Dover died on Aug. 24, 2013 at the Community Hospice House following an extended illness. Born in Belmont, Ohio on Sept. 2, 1923, he was the son of the late Lloyd and Pluma Showalter. He was a veteran of World War II from 1942-1945 with service in Europe. Many reunions followed with fellow serviceman. Howard 'Russ' received his bachelor's degree in Agriculture and master's in Agriculture from Ohio State University. He had been an agriculture teacher, 4-H Club agent and county agent. He retired as an area farm management agent for several counties for OSU extension in 1982. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dover, an associate member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Sarasota, Fla., member and past Master of Masonic Lodge F&AM, member of the Tuscarawas Valley Ruritan Club, Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, Alumni Club of Ohio State University, and the VFW of Dover.
Russ is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy Showalter; daughter, Susan (William) Hoffmeyer of Massillon; daughter, Sandra Showalter of Nashville, Tenn.; and step-granddaughter, Rhonda Hoffmeyer of New Philadelphia. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Ruth Wood of St. Clairsville.
Memorial services will be held in the Toland-Herzig Funeral Home & Crematory in Dover on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Pastor David Kowaleski officiating. Following the service, the Dover VFW will conduct military honors at the funeral home. Friends are invited to call on Saturday from 11-1 p.m. A meal will be served at the Toland-Herzig Monarch Center.
