John J. Curtis
age 85, of Canton, passed away Thursday October 17, 2013 in Bethany Nursing Home. Born in New York he was the son of the late James and Stella (Baralier) Curtis and had lived in Canton most of his life. He was a graduate of McKinley High School, Bowling Green University where he received a degree in education and was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He was a school teacher working for both Canton Local & Canton City Schools, and retired from the U.S Post Office as a mail carrier. He was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church, St. Peter's Men's Club/Holy Name Society, the National Letter Carrier Association and in his retirement served as a school safety crossing guard. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Harry Orphan and nephew, Nick Orphan. He is survived by his wife, Athene (Pollos) Curtis of the home; daughter, Kathy (John) Nicholas of Canton; grandchildren, Mary Nicholas, Michael Nicholas; sister, Sophie Orphan of Canton; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mass of Christian burial will be Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Peter Catholic Church with Fr. Edward L. Beneleit as celebrant. There will be no calling hours. The family would like to thank the Baum Family and the entire staff of the Bethany Nursing Home for their outstanding care. Donations may be made in his name to St. Peter Catholic Church.
