83, of Liberty, died Monday evening, Dec. 31, at Hospice of the Valley, Hospice House. Bob was born July 13, 1929 in Massillon, Ohio, a son of German immigrants, Karl and Elizabeth Schweigert Link. Bob was a 1947 graduate of Massillon Washington High School, where he was captain of the basketball team. He received his Bachelor Degree in Accounting from Miami University of Ohio, class of 1951 where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and played on the basketball team. Bob worked his way through college delivering ice. A Korean War veteran, Bob was honorably discharged as Corporal of the US Army from August 1951 to July 1953, HQ 28th infantry division, Germany. Returning to the area, Bob was employed at Republic Steel (LTV Steel) and retired as finance director in 1984. He then was employed as controller for the former Advanced Gold Cross Ambulance and Davidson-Becker Funeral Home from 1984 to 1995. An avid sportsman, Bob was captain of his high school and college basketball teams, coached little league baseball, enjoyed camping with his family, and harness racing. He also enjoyed golf and invented the 'Link Rules' of golf, including the 'Link Foot Wedge'.
Bob leaves his loving wife of 59 years, the former Nancy Davenport, whom he married in Nov. 25, 1953; one daughter, Tamara Link of Raleigh, N.C.; two sons, William (Patty) Link of Girard, and Thomas Link of Liberty; one sister, Esther Shallenberger of Massillon; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son, Robert Link; two sisters, Ruth Schlegel and Alice Creter; and one brother, Karl Link.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 1 p.m. at the Davidson-Becker Funeral Home, Struthers. Friends will be received Saturday from 12 noon until 1 p.m. Condolences may be sent at
