Arturo 'Uncle Art' Sacco
91, of Louisville, passed away on Wednesday, March 20, 2013 in the emergency room at Aultman Hospital.
Born on Jan. 19, 1922 in Alliance, he had lived in Alliance all his life and was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Arthur was placed in the Fairmount Children's Home, when his mother died in 1925; there he received his education and later graduated from Alliance High School. Following high school, he enlisted in the Civilian Conservation Corps in Utah. A veteran of World War II, he served our country in the U. S. Navy. Art had enlisted in the regular Navy in May of 1942, taking his boot camp training at Great Lakes, Ill. He had served in the Pacific Theatre in Guam, the Philippines and Pearl Harbor. He was also a survivor of the West Loch Tragedy in Pearl Harbor. He had earned the American Defense Medal, Asia Pacific Medal with seven bronze stars, Philippine Liberation Medal, the Japanese Occupation Medal and a Purple Heart. Art has served as Metalsmith 1st Class on several Naval Vessels including: LST-480, LST-1102, LSD-14 and ARL-31. Before his discharge in 1949, Art was also involved in construction work as an engineer for the Army Air Corp in Guam. After returning home, he co-founded Broadway Iron & Metal Company in Alliance. Mr. Sacco was a member of the Christopher Columbus Society, Dante Alighieri Society, and the United Commercial Travelers. Art was also a member of the V.F.W. Post #1036, American Legion Post #0888, the U.S.S. LST Association, the Ohio LST Amphibs Association and the Plank Owner of Navy Memorial Association in Washington, D.C. His favorite pastime activities included fishing, hunting and gardening. He was a wonderful story teller of history and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Helen (Muhleman) Sacco whom he married in 1950; three daughters, Cindy Sacco-Shetler, Rhonda (Tim) McCully and Rita Rust; three sons, Thomas Sacco, Robert Sacco and Ronald (June) Sacco; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews, including a special nephew, Jerry. Preceding him in death were his parents, Saverio Matteo and Rose Marie (Pizzutti) Sacco; a daughter, Deborah Marie; a sister, Helen Claytor; a brother, George Sacco; and an infant brother, Arturo.
The family will receive friends at Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home on Friday, March 22, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Matthew M. Mankowski as celebrant. Interment, with military honors will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
