Ava Marie Allen
Age 89, a resident of the Gaston community in Oregon, formerly of Robertsville, Ohio, died on Monday, Oct. 4, 2010, at Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore. She was born on March 23, 1921, in Washburn, W.Va., to Calvin Newton and Barbara Ellen (Parsons) Cox. Ava attended Washburn Grade School and graduated from Harrisville High School in 1939. On Aug. 31, 1940, she married Arthur (Art) W. Allen of Mahone, W.Va., in Catlettsburg, Ky. They lived in Ritchie County, W.Va. until moving to Blacksburg, Va., where Art was employed at Radford Army Ammunition Plant until the end of World War II. They returned to West Virginia, and later moved to Ohio, settling in Robertsville, Ohio in 1950. She and Art spent their winters at their winter home in Bradenton, Fla. for the last 15 years together. Soon after Art preceded her in death, she moved to Washougal, Wash. and in 2008 to Gaston, Ore. to be near her family. They celebrated over 65 years together before Art passed away. She was a homemaker and longtime member of the Christ Memorial Church in Robertsville, Ohio. She was also a member of the Grange and several square dance clubs. She and Art enjoyed camping and square dancing very much. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2004; and a son, Arthur Vernon Allen in 2007.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Donald B. and Donna Allen of Gaston, Ore., and Jack and Vicki Allen, of McMinnville, Ore.; and by a sister and brother-in-law, Mary and James (Pete) W. Cox, Jr, of Dublin, Va.; and a sister-in-law, Virgil Allen of Massillon; seven grandchildren, Carla Jean Brady (Mike), Donald A. Allen (Kelly), Terri Lynn Vasickanin (Vince), Kaci Lynn Luttrell (Al) and Jack N. Allen (Laura), Angela M. Russell (Jason) and Chris Hansen (Cassie); and by eight great-grandchildren, Lauren, Sean, Hope, Nathan, Alexis, Joline, Landon and Ayden.
A Celebration of Ava's Life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 11, 2010, at Christ Memorial Church, 2620 Robertsville Ave., Robertsville, OH 44670, with Reverend Jeff Lord officiating. Burial will follow at the Robertsville Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment in the church fellowship hall. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3-6 p.m. at the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva. The family suggests remembrances to the Robertsville Christ Memorial Church, 2620 Robertsville Ave., Robertsville, OH 44670, in her memory.
