Carl C. Felger 1920-2017
Carl C. Felger, 97, of Minerva, Ohio, passed away Sunday, September 17, 2017, at the Arbors in Minerva. He was born in Freeburg, Ohio, on June 15, 1920, a son of the late Edwin E. and Alta (Otto) Felger. Carl worked for the New York Central, Penn Central, and retired from Conrail after 42 years of total service. He was a member of the Minerva United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Directors and taught 5th and 6th grade Sunday School. He also was involved in distributing food through the church food bank for needy people. He served in the US Army during World War II. His military service began in September 1941. He was in the 102nd Infantry Division 405th Regiment, Company "K". He entered the War Zone from the German Liner John Ericsson at Cherbourg France arriving on September 23, 1944. On October 28, 1944, Carl was committed to combat beginning at Waurichen, Germany. In April 1945, they traveled through villages and the occupation of German villages followed until December 24, 1945 when he left with the 79th Division on points for home. He arrived home on January 6, 1946 and was discharged on January 16, 1946 as First Sergeant. He received the Bronze Star for heroic service under enemy fire. Carl will be inducted, posthumously into the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame on November 9, 2017. After Carl came home from serving his country, he continued to serve his Community and the County where he resided. Carl was involved in numerous organizations and received numerous awards. He was a member of the Don V Cross American Legion Post #357 for 32 years. He held the position of Adjutant for 29 years and was a past Chaplain of the American Legion Post. He also served as the committee chairman for Boys State and attended State District Conventions as a representative from 1990-1993. In 2013, Carl was the Legionnaire of The Year. Carl was a member of the Tubal Masonic Lodge #551 and was a 32nd Degree Mason. He was also a member of the Scottish Rites Valley of Canton and the Brown Frame Friendly Circle. In 1989, he received the National AARP Award. On May 5,1997, Carl received special recognition from Mayor Waller for Community Service in Minerva and in 1999, Carl was inducted into the Minerva High School Alumni Hall of Fame. In 2016, he received the Jenco Award for visionary leadership and community service across Appalachian Ohio. In 2017, he was recognized by the service clubs of Minerva as the Citizen of the Year. In his spare time, Carl delivered meals on wheels to shut-ins, and was a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.
Carl is survived by his wife of 70 years, of Ruth A. (Moser) Felger; two daughters, Carla Unkefer of Millersburg and Janice (Mark) Maurer of Carrollton; two sons, Edwin of Minerva and James of Charlotte N.C.; eight grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Vesta Waffler of North Georgetown; and a brother, Burleigh (Marilyn) Felger of Alliance. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Harold "Sonny" Felger.
Calling Hours will be Friday, September 22, 2017, from 6 - 9 p.m. at the Minerva United Methodist Church. Masonic services will be at 5:45 p.m. prior to the Calling Hours. Memorial services with full military honors will be held on Monday, September 25, 2017, at 11 a.m. at East Lawn Cemetery with Rev. Harley Wheeler officiating.
