Caroline (Uhl) Van Dress Obituary
Caroline (Uhl) Van Dress 1929-2017
Caroline Uhl never wanted to have children. Caroline Van Dress gave birth to 15. Her life and its direction changed dramatically when she met her husband of nearly 68 years, Ronald Van Dress. Or perhaps she found her direction. For Caroline, who died July 1 after suffering a stroke in her sleep, was a homemaker extraordinaire. She was studying French after graduating from Massillon's Washington High School with dreams of becoming an interpreter who might have traveled the world. She would not have been nearly as happy or fulfilled as she was surrounded by her noisy, unique and often unruly bunch. Her devotion to Ronald and their unbreakable bond was seen in the way they held hands in church, worked side-by-side on a scaffold repointing each brick of their century home, and cultivating, harvesting and preserving the many vegetables and fruits grown on their seven acres in Maximo.
She taught her children biology while dissecting chickens to can the meat for soup; quizzed them on states and capitals around the kitchen table while she prepared meals; played charades while shelling peas to make the work more palatable — and oh, her pies. They simply can't be duplicated. A wise and strong woman was Caroline; a great love and life she shared with Ronald.
No calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Maximo, on Wednesday, July 5, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow in Holy Family Parish St. Clement Cemetery, Navarre. You are invited to view Caroline's tribute wall, offer condolences and share memories at www.sharerfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are by the Sharer-Stirling-Skivolocke Funeral Home.
