Ira Baker
Age 85, of East Rochester, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 27, 2011 in Aultman Hospital. He was born in Rogers, Ohio on Feb. 5, 1926. Ira loved life, and enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife, Evelyn (Bowman) Baker. They married in 1979 and have spent the last three decades seeing the sights on trips to Alaska, Nova Scotia and throughout the U.S. Ira was a handyman and enjoyed woodworking projects. He built many beautiful furniture pieces – even a dulcimer – for family and friends. He was a dairy farmer in Summitville for many years, and also worked as a minor and truck driver. He owned an excavating business and operated a sawmill west of Augusta. Ira was a World War II US Navy Veteran and member of the Minerva First Christian Church and the Loyal Men's and Women's Sunday School Class.
Ira 'Pop' as he is known to family, is survived by his wife, Evelyn and children, John (Evelyn) Baker of Carrollton, Richard (Darcy) Baker of Carrollton, Mary Ann (Jim) Brown of Salineville, Linda Benington of Carrollton, Brad (Regena) Bowman of East Rochester, Bob (Crystal) Bowman of Mechanicstown; 48 grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brother, Dale Baker of Lisbon and sister, Goldie Thomas of Lisbon. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Gloria Stockman; a son, Edward; brother, Glen Baker and a sister, Grace Allison.
Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with Mr. Ralph Norman officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services. Memorial contributions may be made to the Minerva First Christian Church.
