Janak Sandhu Obituary
Janak Sandhu
of Auburndale, Mass. passed away peacefully Tuesday morning Sept. 5, 2017 surrounded by her loving children in her home at the age of 97. She was born on Feb. 10, 1920 in Lahore, India, to the late Nand Lal Bakaya and Lalita Atal. Janak made her home in Auburndale, Mass., where she lived for three decades. She had previously resided in Canton, Ohio, where she lived with her husband for 25 years, raising their three children. Her childhood home was in Gujrat, India, now part of Pakistan.
Janak married her husband Charan, a psychiatrist, in 1939, and received her B.A. from Punjab University in 1945. The couple moved to the U.S. in 1948 and lived in the Midwest until Charan's death in 1988. Her activities & interests included specializing in Indian cuisine. She enjoyed family events and home cooked meals. She had a passion for walking and joined a walking club in Newton at the age of 69. She also learned to drive at age 69 and started using a treadmill when she turned 80.
She was always interested in politics and world news events; she loved discussing national and international affairs. Her favorite pastimes included doing crossword puzzles and watching Jeopardy. Janak was an avid reader of newspapers, books and was a lifelong learner. After losing most of her eyesight to macular degeneration, she transferred her love of reading to enjoying a wide selection of audiobooks.
An elegant woman, Janak was strong, patient, compassionate, generous, and had a keen mind. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She cherished spending time with family and friends, and was a compelling storyteller. She was raised in the Hindu tradition, quietly religious and spiritual, always praying for the health and happiness of family and friends.
Survivors include her son, Hartej Sandhu; and daughters, Tejwant Stead and K. Raina Stuart and their spouses; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Hindu funeral services in celebration of Janak's life were held privately for her family. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in her memory to Helen Keller International, 352 Park Avenue South, 12th Floor New York, NY 10010 helenkellerfoundation.org or USA P.O. Box 5030, Hagerstown, MD 21741-5030 doctorswithoutborders.org.
