Joseph G. Scheetz “Together Again”
age 96, of Canton, passed away peacefully Saturday, Sept. 9 in Canton. A life resident of the Canton area, Joe graduated from Jackson High School and Canton Business College. He served proudly in the Army during World War II, earning four bronze battle stars during his deployment in Europe. Upon his return after the war, Joe began his distinguished career in finance at Hercules Engines culminating as President and member of the board of directors. He retired after 39 years of service in 1987. Joe also served on numerous boards of public corporations and local charitable organizations. He was a founding and faithful member of St. Michael Church in Canton. Joe was an avid golfer and proud member of Brookside Country Club for 50 years, and served as club president in 1986 and many years as a director. He was also a past member of The Canton Club, Oakwood Country Club, Catawba Island Club, and Glenmoor Country Club. Joe and Mil were avid travelers, visiting over 40 different countries.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence J. and Mary M. Scheetz, and his beloved wife of 56 years, Mildred. He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Howard and Cindy Scheetz, Lawrence and Dani Scheetz and daughter and son-in-law, Johanna and Lee Shafer. Also survived by grandchildren, Michael Scheetz, Katie Aquila and Julia Mitchell, Lawrence Scheetz III, PJ Scheetz, Samantha Guiao and Spencer Scheetz; and Stephanie Herceg and Joseph Shafer. Survived also by 11 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael the Archangel Church with Rev. Fr. Don King officiating. The family will receive friends and colleagues at the church before the memorial service, beginning at 9 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the St. Michael Building fund.
