Josephine A. "JoAnn" Mechaney
Born Josephine A. Mechaney on May 4, 1928, to the late James L. and Josephine Meade Mechaney in Cleveland, Ohio, JoAnn died peacefully, after a long life of caring and generosity, on June 20, 2017 with her "three good girls" and great granddaughter, Cayla by her side.
JoAnn never gave up on Dutch, the love of her life, even during the times she was raising their daughters by herself, self- sacrificing to make sure they had everything they needed. She put herself through business school while working at Eckard's Drive-in as a waitress, then went to work as a bookkeeper for Karl Kuemmerling Inc. JoAnn was later hired by Paul and Bob David, Stark Record Service which became Camelot Music and remained until retirement.
She willingly lent a hand to help family, friends, and neighbors in whatever they needed and did various volunteer work. JoAnn was an avid crafter, teaching her daughters to sew and taught some classes in Branson, Mo. She delighted in papercrafting with her daughters. JoAnn's greatest joys were her three daughters; four grandchildren; seven great- grandchildren; great-great-grandson; and her beloved dogs, most recently Nikki, who eagerly greeted her at the Rainbow Bridge. Preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Carl J. "Dutch" Clapper; brothers, Jerome and James Mechaney; sister, Jacqueline Shank; and sons-in-law, Russell Fryberger and Thomas W. Adams. JoAnn is survived by her three loving daughters, Susan (fiancé Robert Broffman) Fryberger, Carlee Adams (Bill) Gulledge, and Cathleen (Joe) Clifford; grandchildren, Jefferson (JoAnn Sterner) Donato, Toni Donato (Paul) Shade, Christopher (fiancée Mia Kunst), and Cate-lyn Adams (Austin) Kelley; great grandchildren, Tori-Jo (Corey) Benoit, Taylor, Tessa, and Tedi-Jo Shade, Cayla ,Thomas A. Adams and Ava Adams Kelley; great-great- grandson, Xander Benoit; sisters Judy Ecrement, Jody Safreed, and Jennifer Gates; brother-in-law, Thomas Shank; and many nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life will be Aug. 5, 2017, 10 a.m.-12 p.m., North Canton Civic Center, 845 W Maple St. North Canton 44720. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in JoAnn's memory to Stark County Humane Society, Woodlawn Compassionate Care Center, or .
