Mary E. Peterson 1930-2017
87, died at her home on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2017. Mary was born in Wellsville, Ohio, on August 2, 1930. Following her graduation from Malone College (formerly Cleveland Bible College), she moved to Canton and started teaching with Canton City Schools at McGregor Elementary School, retiring from there in 1991. She earned her Master's Degree from Kent State University in 1969. Mary was an active member of Canton First Church of the Nazarene for over 50 years, teaching Sunday school until just a few weeks ago, singing in the choir, very active in reaching out to shut-ins and those in nursing homes and was honored with a Distinguished Service Award in 2002.
Preceded in death by her parents, Guy and Edith (Todd) Peterson; brother, Dwain Peterson and sisters, Esther J. Peterson and Ruth E. (Peterson) Coy. She is survived by her sister, Betty J. Peterson of Sebring; brother-in-law, John W. Coy of Alliance; nieces, Joni (Mark) Strank of Lisbon and Betsy J. Coy of Alliance; great-nieces, Alia (Mark) West of Hanoverton and Kyrstan Rose of Lisbon; great-great-nieces, Sophie and Remi West of Hanoverton; several cousins and close friends.
Per her wishes cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2017 at Canton First Church of the Nazarene 522 30th St. NW Canton, Ohio 44709 with Pastor Dan Hanson officiating. Family and friends may visit from 10-11 a.m. prior to the service at the church. The family invites you to visit www.reedfuneralhome.com.
